Rabbits and Chickens
« on: November 05, 2012, 00:03 »
Hi folks.

Can anyone advise if there will be a problem keeping Rabbits and Chickens in the same run.

They wont be sharing the same house but both the Hutch and the Coop will be in the same "walk in run" that we propose to build.

The Run would be appx 9'x15'

 Many thanks

two problems spring to mind - the first is how are you going to stop the chickens from using the rabbit hutch to sleep in? And the second is that chickens love to peck at shiney things and a rabbits eyes can prove too much of a temptation.
Staffies are softer than you think.

I have both chickens and rabbits but I would let them "free" in the same area!

Think the bunnies might get a bit mucky from the chicken poo and the food would be different!

A "No Chickens" sign on the hutch door and some form of bunny protective goggles might be the order of the day.

Maybe employ some Guinea Pig Bouncers to break up any fights.
Rabbits can be a bit leary after a few drinks.

Yep, think i might have to do some more research, they may have to have smaller seperate runs

I keep rabbits and chickens and personally wouldnt keep them together as they have different needs but I have heard of people that do.  For one, chickens poop everywhere and your rabbits would be hopping around in it.  They eat different foods - so have different nutritional requirements.  Chickens turn their runs to mud.  Rabbits like to graze on grass and chickens like to dig it up.  Just a few points.  :)  Not sure about diseases between the two.
