Title: My chilli plant is crying!
Post by: galen on May 09, 2012, 18:25
I'm not sure whether this is a chilli specific problem or if anyone else has encountered this on other plants, it just seems a bit different. Anyway...

I have a 3 year old Hot Lemon plant which overnight has started to "weep" from the bottom surface of the leaves. I have no problems with other plants nearby, although have moved it in case it's catching, growing conditions etc haven't changed and can't see any leave damage or insect life (examined with magnifying glass). Any ideas ?  ???

Over-watering??????
Have you tasted it?

No, definitely not over, or indeed under, watered.  :)

I did a taste test and from my perspective it was neutral

mm strange I've only ever seen it as a result of overwatering. Wonder what's going on

Hope not too cold indoors and temperature never below 16c.

Soil should be ok, I repot and cut back every Jan / Feb and gave it (and all my other chilli plants) a general all round liquid feed over the weekend.

I know last year I lost 1 of my other Hot Lemons, they don't seem the best at overwintering, but this one had sailed past the "dodgy" stage and had put on loads of new growth and then overnight started "crying" just thought, some pictures :

This is called guttation and is normal in a lot of plants when the 'push' of water up from the roots is greater than the 'pull' of water exiting the leaves. So either lots of water going in at the roots or very little leaving from the shoot (e.g during humid conditions or at night).

 I never knew that !

I assume this would be a major factor if the plant had been trimmed to over winter but the root ball left as was ?

Hi just incase anyone is interested or if you need info on Chili growing this place is a really good Chili farm where you can go to buy chili's, Chili plants and sauces the do pick your own aswell. They have Chili tours where they tell you about chili's and plants, how to grow them and to look after them, cooking with them then you do Chili tasting. I was working at there house last year and now go there alot and they are alot of help with any info I need with my plants. http://www.edibleornamentals.co.uk/

Thanks Dr Pepper, it was humid a couple of nights ago and thinking back I did some minimal prunning last weekend after watering so the roots most probably had taken up the water but had less foilage to dispose of it.

Talking of seeing it on other plants, I have recalled seeing it on sweetcorn seedlings in previous years...
