Title: Rampant Radishes!
Post by: puravida on August 24, 2006, 10:26
Hi,
I am new here. I just really got into gardening and just stated to grow my own veg etc about three or four months ago. I started off with some grow bags and tomato plants which are now looking great. More recently, I have peas on the go, salad leaves, radishes, rocket and a fwe other bits.

I have grand plans to turn a large area of my garden into a veg plot ov er the next 12 months so I anticipate becoming a regular member of this forum and learning whatever I can!!!

On a more pressing matter - I planted a few rows of radishes in a small raised bed about a week or so ago. They have really gone crazy and it looks like mini-hedges of seedlings. Do I need to thin them out? If so, can I transplant the ones I remove anywhere??

Thanks!!!

PS - I am a regular dusk slug hunter too so any tips for that apart from stab them and fling them over the hedge woudl be great.

Hallo puravida - your method for dispatching the slugs is spot on, don't change it!

Yes, thin them out. You can usually manage to pick a few out big enough to eat and let the other ones get bigger.

I just chucked some radishes in a Tai curry that I do and they were marvelous, every one asked what they were and if there was more, yummy :tongue2:

If you thin them out, use the thinnings like cress.  If they're a bit bigger, then put the entire plants into a green salad.  If bigger still (you planted them so close together that they never turned into radishes) steam the entire plant, and use it like spinnach.  Yum.  If you managed to get some decent radishes, then don't throw the leaves away - either add to salad, or steam.
