Title: French Marigolds
Post by: buckie on May 08, 2007, 00:21
I have sown a full packet of French Marigolds to use as a deterrent to whitefly on my tomatoes.  I do this every year but this year germination was about 100% as usual with marigolds but every plant came up  "blind".  Every one has grown very well but not one has any flower buds, I usually nip out the first central bud to get more growth in the plant but this sowing is 100% leaf.  I have nipped out the central shoot and all I have got is foliage.  Can anyone give me an idea what may have caused this?

No idea  :(

Try giving them some tomato fertiliser to encourage flowering.

One thing they will still do the job you grew them for flowers or no flowers. The roots will also deter pests. The lack of flower maybe the seed or the hot weather or both.

I've never in all the years I have grown Marigolds had a failed lot, but this year my first sowing failed I only got five marigolds out of a full packet. 2nd sowing did well.
Maybe its been too hot, dont really know.
