Title: storing chilli peppers
Post by: All thumbs on August 14, 2008, 12:23
Having successfully grown them, don't know what to do next.  Should they be dried for later use or can they be frozen "as is"? Any advice would be much appreciated.

Hiya, i froze them as they were last year, just stuck them in to the freezer on a baking sheet, bagged them up when they were frozen and just took one out when i needed it, it worked fine but they did loose their crunch, this year ive got some between kitchen roll just left to dry out on their own, then i will crumble them and put in jars, got some others strung together drying as i want a nice pretty string of chillies in my kitchen.

I have ripe chilli pods from my Birdseye, Little elf, Twilight, Thai mound and purple prince.
Another couple of days I will have the first of my 7Pots and I
will have 1 which i think has cross pollinated.

Ive had ripe chillies for 2 months now, started them off in January though.
They seem to love my bay window.

Thanks mtoyne - am about to freeze chillies on trays prior to bagging.  As I only use them to make curries it won't matter if they lose their crunch.
As for sadgit's response perhaps the fact that we live in Manche (not short for Manchester) but lower Normandie near the Orne Mayenne borders, has made the difference as we have had a good summer so far (and no, I'm not gloating! Or perhaps I am?   :D )
Anyway, thanks for the responses 'cos this was my first post.
