the big fluffy one is gorgeous :)

Try not to be frightened of mastiffs Pamela they really are great dogs, you just have to respect their power potential and you must be the pack leader so just be assertive.
Staffies are softer than you think.

The big dog, the Doge de Bordeaux type is off to Barcelona on Sunday morning, thank goodness.  I hope we never take a dog like him in again, unless we have proper really secure kennels for them. He got out of his enclosure last night, the lady there said it was scary, I had voiced my concerns about the enclosure not being secure, I was told he would never get out!!  Thank god I was not there!!

The big dog, Bull, went off to a special refuge in Barcelona and one of the big pups, a Podenco/Dalmatian cross also went to a new home Barcelona way.
This afternoon we are taking Tibet's sister to the vet. She is very poorly. At the moment she is being fostered, but the family are moving to a flat, so she cannot go with them.
She has been having problems walking, limping on her back legs, not like Tibet, he only limped on one leg.  She has had all sorts of xrays, been seen by the bone specialist, but nothing can be seen to be wrong, she is really struggling to get up. She is on medication. She is now being very sick and has diarrhea and will not eat or drink.  We do not know if she will come home from the vets tonight :(  if the vet says she is suffering we will have her put to sleep.

Tibet's sister stayed at the vets last night, she had a blood test this morning, she has leishmania, a very nasty infection caused by the sandfly.
What will be the outcome I do not know yet. Her bloodcount for the infection is very very high. It depends on how her kidneys are. If her organs are bad I think she will be put to sleep.  There is now a vaccine available but to get the refuge dogs treated with it we are looking at around 7,500€ or more. Even to get our dogs here treated we are looking at around 800€ :(  the second year it would be around 30€ per dog. The first step is a blood test, then if clear 3 jabs. Then after that just 1 jab a year.
Poor Marta, she is skin and bone. She is so like Tibet.  We were shown on the way home where they were born, in a ditch at the side of the main road :(
I hate the refuge at times, it gives us such sad hearts :( :(

If only people would get the male dogs at least castrated at least it would stop lots of unwanted pups, but they think it is ' cruel'  >:( idiots!!
I guess that is a problem world wide though >:(

I am sure thatmen think it is their bits being chopped off so say no!!

You could be right there Pamela - you can just imagine them standing in the vets with their legs crossed.

It is a pity that there could not be some sort of public service broadcasting to explain that it is not cruel and that it is far more cruel to let the poor animals have litter after litter which are then just tossed aside.

More bad news, the president of the refuge is fostering a dog at her flat, it has jumped from the balcony to the street below   the dog is not very well and the poor lady very distraught understandably.  She does so much for the dogs, she is not a sit back and let the volunteers get on, she works very hard for the refuge. So Jim and I are off to the vet again.

It's the same over here. There is a programme where you can get your dogs seen to free of charge at regular intervals, but it seems this is more cruel than letting bitches have multiple unwanted litters (which come to a nasty end) and male dogs running around in packs attacking other dogs. Street dogs are given an ear tag if neutered.

We are told they had a bit of a problem with too many dogs on the street last year, so they were rounded up and...er...disposed of. But others move in. There is a refuge close to us, but no-one lives there so the dogs are left alone a lot of the time, and the barking can go on....I feel sorry for them but glad we are no closer. A young Russian couple with a baby live right behind them. Goodness knows what will happen if the people caring for them can't get here in the depths of winter when the roads are often closed.

A quick update..... The dog did not jump from the balcony, he jumped off a 2 storey roof   he is one very lucky dog , no internal injuries but possibly torn ligaments in one leg, nothing broken   he is off to the refuge now he needs rest. He is full of fleas
Tibet's sister is very poorly. I think she is going to be put to sleep. She has one more blood test due back, everything else was bad, what with the problems with her spine, some days she cannot walk at all and the leishmania, she is very poorly.
I will give Tibet a big cuddle when I get in.

Marta was put to sleep tonight  :( I know it is for the best, we did it with very heavy hearts, but she is not suffering any more.  Tibet is being strange tonight, he is right under the table against the wall, he never goes there, it is as if he knows about his sister :(
One of our two steps back days today.

Sending you hugs Pamela and some for Tibet.  It would not have been fair to let Martha suffer so please think of her not suffering any longer and the care she was given.   :)

The dog that jumped from the roof was full of fleas   I was picking them off him as we drove to the vets   While we were at the vets I killed loads while the dog was asleep after having a scan /xray.
It was the same on the way home!!
This morning we drove into town and a flea jumped onto my arm    So we bought strong ínstant´ ant killer and sprayed all the seats and floor of the car and shut the door.  Hopefully that will have killed any still there!!  The dog is being de-flead today at the refuge, well I mean treated with the flea stuff.  We might get bad tick problems at the refuge but fleas we do not have!!  Which is a surprise really
