Beetroot wine.
« on: July 18, 2013, 20:12 »
I thinned out the beetroot this morning, ended up with three pounds of smallish roots so I've knocked up a gallon of wine, because I was a little low on poundage I added two litres of red grape, hope it turns out o.k.
Had a hot beetroot sandwich for lunch, delicious. :tongue2:
Guess what we're having for tea..........? :)

We've run out of beetroot at the moment, our first planting was when it was too cold so only half came up. We're waiting for our 2nd sowing to fill out and then I want to make a gall.

I have a beetroot wine on the go, the sugar content was very high and I only used half the amount of sugar that the recipe said to use so I hope its ok, bit of a fiddle to make though, as my recipe said to grate it in a food processor, then boil it for 10 minutes. I like my beetroot warmed up then soaked in balsamic vinegar.

Bung in the extra sugar because it all turns to alcohol anyway.  You wont taste the sugar in the final wine.  But you will feel the zing!! :D Chuck it in. Honest.

I found old shriveled beetroot best for wine making, they contain more natural sugars and improve the finished product. Wait at least one year if not longer. Hope your dj  is a dark one. These stop sunlight turning the red wines brown .:)
