Fresh courgette today....
« on: January 07, 2018, 12:16 »
A strange thing - I harvested a round courgette in the summer, and as I had a lot of them at the time I left it on the shelves in my cellar. I decided I had better do something with it today, and its fresh and moist. The plant it  came from was grown from a seed packet and so wasn't a winter squash hybrid.
The courgette loaf is in the oven as I write.....

Interesting.  I grew round courgettes last year from Franchii and they did have good skins on them.  Maybe I will try keeping a few next year.

We had loads from just 2 plants and even the chickens got fed up of them.  If they start to go I can always feed the chucks.   Despite their summer beak curling,  they would be over the moon if I produced one from the shed now

Well that's a turn up, fresh courgette in January. Obviously the conditions in the cellar were just right  :D :D

I had one in my garage which I used on Christmas Day in Ratatouille.  They seem to keep well.

I think mine was from Franchi  as well, but I can't recall and  my record keeping wasn't too good last year! I'm not sure what the skin would have been like, but the flesh was lovely.

I meant good skins as in fairly robust, rather than the very thin ones you get on some that tear at the slightest opportunity   I expect they do harden a bit in store though.

We did like this traditional variety last year.  Even when they hid and grew large, they were fine to eat and they actually tasted courgetty.  I know that sounds daft, but some types are pretty insipid imo.

That's decided me  :D  I'm keeping the last few next year and they can live on the shelves in the shed for a bit.  By the end of the season, we've eaten enough and could do with a break for a month or so  :)
