broken goose egg
« on: March 26, 2007, 18:15 »
My goose who is currently sitting on nine eggs has broken one, the question now is do i disturb the nest to clean it up put in new straw etc, if i do this will it put her off sitting on them again, or do i leave it but then will it create germs and infect the other eggs.
Any advice anyone ?

get help .......get her out and take her for a walk out of view .clean up the egg mess with fresh bedding and replace her ... with luck she wont know ya been in .. dont spend more than 5 mins doing . get another hel-per to put eggs under jumper to keep warm .. i occasionally pop them under a warm newspaper and bacofoil wrap if i know its gonna take a minute or 2 longer had a lady amherst pheasant who busted 3 of 17 eggs and i had to sort her out  amongst a load chucks
still alive /............

God this is going to be fun (not), i will definately not be able to get her out of view, they never ever leave the paddock even though i always open the gate in the morning into my other fields, i think military precision and corn is called for.  will let you know how i get on tomorrow.

ARE YOU HAVING A LAUGH,   l: i like all 10 fingers and thumbs thank you very much, unfortunately they are three years old and i have only had them a few months, so i still get hissed at whenever i go near, even more so now she is broody, i think i will wait till she comes out on her own accord and get a helper to distract her with treats so i can clean it out quickly.  Serves me right for my "good day" post yesterday

False alarm, managed to sneak in this afternoon and could not find a broken egg, yesterday she definately had yolk on her belly, all i can think of is she squished one of the chooks eggs, they do sometimes sneak into her house and lay the odd egg, when they are feeling brave or stupid not sure which.

definatly something you need to diswcourage  geese carry muck all around thier body full of yucky bacteria and sitting on hens egs will transfer it .if you intend to breed from your chucks this can result in them going off and dying etc . make the entrance of the nest box to small for geese to get in  a 10 inch opening is large enough for chickens
