How to revive a ranunculus?
« on: May 11, 2009, 15:40 »
I bought a lovely bi-colour ranunculus just before Easter - seemed vigorous and healthy. since then it's got weedier and weedier, with some pathetically small flowers and tatty leaves. It did get a bit overshadowed by the hellebore i planted at the same time (and which grew like Topsy), but I've made sure it's got more light for the past two weeks, and it's not looking any better.

another one i bought around the same time (in a different bed, but similar conditions) is happily flowering away...

so this weekend i gave it a severe haircut in the hope of jumpstarting it... was this the right thing to do? any other tips?

thanks!

Ranunculi need regular watering and monthly feeding with a bulb type fertilizer to maintain optimum growth. But, they will start to die back for summer as they are primarily a late winter/early spring flowering plant. Not sure if the haircut will help but irregular watering (not boggy conditions) will give it that ragged look which means its finished for the season.
