Title: The first thing ever?
Post by: stompy on May 20, 2010, 08:09
Good morning guys,

Just wondering, what was the first thing ever that you

1, planted on your allotment ?
2, ate from your allotment ?

I know for some of you it may be difficult to remember (due to the amount of time you've worked your plots, not due to age and memory loss)

The first thing i planted on my plot ever was my 3 apple trees and a pear.

The first thing i ever ate from it was a radish.

Im betting the humble radish will be right up there ;)

I started off gardening as an 8-year old helping my mum to grow stuff to help out the family budget; runner beans were the number 1 choice, and 50 years later they still are (she's still "at it" as well at the age of 83!)  :)

Not grown in an allotment, but my first veggie was a tomato plant in a pot, out on the patio. I tended to it the whole summer, watered it, fed it, gave it support. By the end of the summer, only ONE tomato was ripe. Well, I thought, it will be the best tasting tomato ever! But it was completely, utterly, depressingly tasteless!!!! Worse than a supermarket tomato!

First thing planted - spuds. First thing ate - rhubarb left by the previous caretaker. The allotment hadn't be used for years and was completely overgrown. Discovering the rhubarb was a pleasant surprise. The first of my own crops eaten - can't remember whether it was my spuds or my beetroot but both were very reasonable for a beginner.

First thing were mange tout.. never thought the pidgeons would like them. We ended up with Mange "three" which we had as a garnish one night.

Later that year followed by 10 humongous (sp?) red cabbages. I quietly composted 2 of them... (He still doens't know...)

I have a photographic record of tomatoes being the very first thing that I planted.  I’ve got a feeling that is was either radish or rocket that was the first thing to be harvested.

A single row of radishes was all I sowed in my first year. Everybody laughed at them.

The flea beetles were the first to get any kind of nourishment out of them. I don't remember how many of the radishes we eventually ate - they were right woody, that much I do recall.

The ground was rock hard and virtually impossible to dig. Even picking the radishes was hard work. Amazing it didn't put me right off the whole business.

Broad beans planted first as it was autumn and I wanted to start with something. First things eaten were the onions that I found left by the previous owner. First thing of my own was a micro salad from thinnings!

Blimey, I can't think what I planted this year.  But I'll give it a go.

It was spuds, but my first thing that I ate was blackberries from all the brambles I'd hacked back.  We'd got our lottie in August, so didn't bother growing anything.  We just hacked and hacked back the brambles and then dug over the plot taking out all the weed roots - we actually dug it over 3 times before the Spring.  So with all that bramble, we had lots of blackberries which were the best ever

Still waiting for an allotment. :(

I've been growing stuff forever, far too long to remember what was first. Went to boarding school (Army family) and we had a large plot where we used to grow salads, carrots, beans and things.
