Rhubarb
« on: August 23, 2010, 09:43 »
I have read somewhere that rhubarb leaves are poisonous, so is it okay to compost them?
A couple of months ago I cut off some leaves (not many) and put them on the compost heap, so I'm a bit worried now.

Also, I still have a huge amount of rhubarb as I didnt bother cutting much, some green, some green and red...is it too late to use it now, as I also read that it shouldnt be cut after mid July?

Cheers

Dependent on variety but you should stop cutting rhubarb by end of June. The plant needs to build up reserves for the winter so just leave it and it will die down naturally.

With regards to composting. Absolutely fine. It has been brought up here a few times so have a search.
Top tip for camping....don't go.

Nope, compost them all you like my friend.  If you mangle the leaves up and leave them in water for a while, they release the toxin in them and you can use it as a spray to kill bugs in the greenhouse/polytunnel/plot etc.  I am sure there is someone somewhere on here who can tell you better the amounts to use.
No, that carrot is a worm mum.................

Sorry Guzzik but as this isn't licensed we can't condone or authorise its use.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...
