Planting Strawberries - What date is correct?
« on: January 07, 2008, 20:40 »
As per the title when should I order my strawberry plants?

Most catalogues have them ready now but most sites say plant in April!

What is the correct time?

Thanks,

Cudders

Personally I'd go for April time or a soon as the soil starts to warm, they won't do any good sitting in cold damp soil. Depending on how they come you could pot them on for now into 3" pots if not already in something similar.

That's got to be right. Stick them in a coldframe/greenhouse or on a windowsill indoors. They'll get a head start and no root disturbance when they eventually go outside

Right ok pots it is then for now.

Will they be ok in a conservatory? It does get cold in there but it's under cover. The greenhouse I inherited has glass missing so no good till I get round to fixing it!

Any time will do in my opinion, really.

Splodger's are her own runners which she potted up months ago as little things.

These guys will come with 5-7 inch roots, hack of a pot you'd need for each :!: , plant them up, when they come, unless ground is frozen, in which case, heel them in till thawed.

not too hot - my small ones are under glass - but most are outside with very little protection - but it's just wet and quite mild here

but i do keep all pots tightly packed together , and gaps in between get filled with ash - so the small pots don't freeze

And make sure you plant them with their crowns at or just above soil level.

Not that there is a strawberry thread, or a thyme one.

But make sure you put it in a silly fancy chatty way in any thread at random, please, wigglyhips likes that, he's bored.

Something like that, but you could always elaborate and say:

What is thyme?

and put it the tomato varieties thread, that should entertain him.
