Help! Egg laid with no shell!
« on: July 04, 2008, 23:38 »
Today had a weird occurrence. My chicken laid an egg with no shell.

I was seriously freaked out... still have it in a bowl (whole). Early today i found a white eggshell like membrane in the run a bit like crinkly cling film I just thought it was a little weird. I thought that was odd. Then later today my chicken laid a egg with no shell! They have access to crushed sea shells, but should i get pure oyster shell instead? I also feed layers pellets.

What's wrong with her? I've heard of soft shells... but this is ridiculous!

i wouldn't worry too much yet Mike, give her a few days and then review, someone with more knowledge will soon be here to give better advice,
we got a tiny egg today and my daughter Pippa decided she would have it for her tea, when she broke it open she found there was no yoke, complete disgust, she said "well, the lazy old so and so, couldn't be bothered to give me a yoke" she still ate it though...............

Be like a duck. Calm on the surface but always paddling like the dickens underneath.

It is just that  :!:   But I'd get her some crushed oyster if I were you.  They don't digest the harder sea shells (mostly cockle) so well and so don't get so much calcium from them.  I use limestone flour too and add a spoonfull of two to their pellets, you can get it from the hores feed suppliers.
