Cauliflower
« on: April 24, 2019, 19:05 »
I'm looking through my seed catalogue at cauliflowers to sow to overwinter but the F1's are quite expensive ranging from £4.00 for 25 seeds to £6.70 for 50 seeds

so Q. whats the diference between Roscoff and Walcheren varieties of cauliflower so what's you choice of a winter cauliflower variety if you grow winter cauliflower i grew Boris but they haven't headed yet ?

I've grown Walcheren for the last 4 or 5 years and not been disappointed. They usually head up early April and give good sized, tasty heads. Last year I also grew Triomphant which headed up mid to late Jan (was hoping they'd make late Dec as advertised but not to be). I got both varieties for £1 from the Harrogate flower show but from DTB they are £2.09 for 90 seeds (Walcheren) and £2.79 for 30 seeds (Triomphant) normally but look out for special offers and certainly the free p&p they normally do on bank holiday weekends (Walcheren can also be bought off a well known internet auction site). I've no hesitation recommending both.

I have grown Aalsmeer in the past, with good results. I think it is a Walcheren type. The heads were ready in April, and were beautifully white. Mine came from Dobies, and there were lots of seeds in the packet. Lots og garden centres would stock these too I think

I sow mine around the beginning of May, so anytime now.
