Tomatoes - Hate to eat them but still grow them
« on: February 06, 2008, 21:06 »
I hate tomatoes but I still grow them as it's nice to offer something to visits when they come around the plot in Summer.

Is there anything anyone else grows that they don't eat?

Asparagus peas, they're pretty though and a bit of a talking point at the dinner table.  Also trying aubergine this year which I loathe (but OH likes), I don't like the wormhole effect!

Pardon me if I'm being naive, Masha, but what's the wormhole effect, then?

I thought the wormhole effect was a means of space travel, I've never had that effect from an aubergine - is it s special type? :)

When you get a hole in an aubergine, that looks like a worm has munched right through it from one side to the other - I was told this is true (I.e. that's what the hole is from) but not sure if it is or not, but it's always put me off because with the soft texture of aubergine I always think I'm going to come across a worm when I'm eating it!

Silly I know!

I've never had a hole in my aubergine, sometimes there might be a small gap around the central seed area, but it doesn't go through to the outside of the fruit.

You only need to worry if there are an odd number of holes.

Radish,
can't stand them, but makes a good project for the kids and they give them away to nanny.

and this year broad beans, yuk!
Nothing else much doing, desperate to get growing in our new garden so i am growing red and green ones. Luckily mum likes those as well.

I'm trying these this year for the first time. They look pretty in the books. Do they taste the same as normal peas?

They're nothing like peas!  More like asparagus than peas, they're not really peas at all in my opinion, they're a great shape with lovely flowers and crop for months, but you have to pick them quite young (about 1") and steam them whole (or blanch and freeze them the same day), any bigger and they're tough and stringy, I actually really didn't like them as I love asparagus but they weren't asparagusy enough for me!  They are unusual though, even if you just grow them for the flowers
