Wallflower question
« on: August 13, 2010, 10:42 »
I'm wondering whether I should dispose of my healthy, strong wallflower plants or can I leave them for next year. I've had snapdragons over-winter and carry on the next year as long as the winter is 'normal' and not a big freeze like last year.

Thanks for any tips.

Hi Thrift,

We're leaving ours in, we have already had some multiple over-winterers here and OH has grown a load more on over the summer (seems quite struck with them) to be planted out now ready to be big enough to produce flower next year.

I haven't grown Wallflowers before and have some in the greenhouse about 3inc tall. Can anyone tell me when is best to  plant them outside and will they need protection in the frost.

Hi Broadhaven,

I would tend to plant out them sooner rather than later now. At 3 inches they should be big enough to cope and they need to go out whilst there is still enough warmth in the soil so that they can get established properly before the cold weather comes. Then they should start flowering for you in the spring. :)

Wallflowers are very hardy - you can sow them directly into the ground in seed beds (most people do) then transplant to allow them to grow on before placing into their final flowering positions...October ish ready for lowering next spring.  ;)
