Okra
« on: July 10, 2013, 18:54 »
Lovely neighbour has been out in our garden today and been pointing out what they want us to use. One row of 25 plants we have found out is okra. I have eaten okra, years ago, as my Dad was brought up in India and was excited when you could suddenly get it in supermarkets. I have to say I had no wish to repeat the experience.

So, what do I do with all these ladies' fingers? There are only two of us and we don't like them. Will they freeze, bottle, dry?

Help!

I like it done the way it is served in Indian restaurants.

Rick Stein has a recipe in his latest book and series. When it has appeared on the TV programme, I believe it will be put up on the BBC website associated with the show.

What's the point, if you don't like them ? *shrugs shoulders*

To save hard feelings harvest some and gradually throw them away, so no-one notices  :D
Then explain that you've tried them and don't like them. That way they won't be trying to get you to plant them ever again  ;)

So much so, that I even tried to grow it here one year.  :nowink:

What about asking what they do with them, hubby loves them and used to eat them all the time when we lived in the states. I have never had, grown or seen them here, he used to have them deep fried in a batter with a dip ?

Can we grow them in this country. What about adding them to a chutney.

What about trying this one, you could always share a few jars with the neighbours who insist you grow it  :)

Good idea, they can have some more courgettes with it. Serously, they love my chutneys as long as they are sweet. They bring them out when the family are around.

I will try them battered as they would not be cooked for long. I would like to get to like them as they grow here and it's too hot for some things so variety can be a problem.

I should imagine bottled or cooked to death in a veg stew. They like their veg very well done!

I really fancied that chutney looked easy too.

Just need to find a good looking turnip one now  ;)

Well, we had our first, extremely fresh okra today. had it in a light and crispy batter and it was very nice. How much of that was due to the batter I'm not sure. Have frozen some too.

So thanks all for the encouragement. :D
