Carrots and horse manure
« on: November 03, 2023, 14:47 »
The bed that I want to put my carrots in next year has very heavy clay soil which could do with having some manure added to it. Can I do this now without it affecting the carrots next year? Thanks.

Hi
think i would go with compost rather than manure and if possible get some grit into it.
If it's a large enough area, try half manure / half compost?

If the manure is still lumpy, the carrots will fork when they hit it, plus it's a bit too rich.
If it is old and fine you could add some (pass it through a riddle first?) and dig it in well.
HM compost would be better.
If you don't have much compost you could just put it into trenches/v-shaped slots along which you sow your carrots.

Not if you add it no dig style just on top as a well rotted mulch.

Thanks for the advise. It’s well rotted but I was concerned as I’ve been told not add manure to beds where you are going to sow carrots. I wasn’t sure whether adding it in the autumn before a spring sowing was ok. I’m going to try it and see!

Try half the bed on top & half dug in & decide which works best for you. Please share your results
