Please help! I stripped my starter clutch!
« on: August 12, 2010, 23:56 »
I have a snapper rear engine rider with a 10hp Briggs pull start.  I accidentally started it in gear, and it took off into my shop.  I was still holding the starter rope, trying my best to get it to stop!  Anyway, I stripped the starter clutch, which is connected to an extension, then to the crankshaft.  I ordered the new starter clutch and extension, but can't get the new extension to thread into the crankshaft.  I tried tapping it a little, and turning it a little, but am afraid of damaging the crankshaft's internal threads even more.  Should I try to use a tap and die to re-thread it?  Thanks, in advance, for the help.

Well, I never got a response, and REALLY needed to get this mower up and running.  I took a chance, and ever-so-carefully tapped out the end of the crankshaft.  The extension and starter clutch screwed on like new, and I'm up and running again.  Just wanted to post the solution in case anyone ever ran into a similar problem.
