to worm or not to worm???
« on: April 09, 2012, 17:37 »
ive had my chooks since Tuesday and they seem very happy and healthy the place we got them from had vaccinated them  and they said they were wormed too. Just for piece of mind should i worm them myself aswell or would this over dose them? Or should i just take the breeders word for it and do them in another 6 months??

Do you know when the breeder dosed them? I would imagine it is unlikely you would overdose them. I tend to worm mine every 3-4 months.

If you have only just had them perhaps leave it a month or so and then start a routine of worming them. If you haven't already, get some Flubenvet 1% which you can mix in with their feed or give as part of a treat.

Hope this helps

I had to email our breeder (although sadly he didn't reply) to ask about worming.
I noticed during the first week we had the ladies that a couple of them were 'gaping' and I had read about gapeworm.
I'm about to order some Flubenvet as it can't hurt to treat them - it's been a month since we got them and although I haven't seen any birds gaping lately, I think they should probably have a dose anyway.
My friend Terry keeps chickens in her garden and I'm sure she said she worms hers monthly.
