Hazel
« on: March 25, 2012, 13:50 »
Hi all

We've recently planted some hazel but we only have 1 bush. Does anyone know how close other hazels need to be for pollination? There are others in the area, just not sure if they're close enough...

Hazel does have male and female flowers on the same tree, but is not self fertile so you need another tree/bush no further than 30m away for pollination to occur.

Pace it out - 1m is about 1 good pace  :)

Hmm, 30m? I might have to buy another then if I'm wanting nuts....the others might be a little out of range.

i hope your site doesnt have squirrels! my lottie neighbour has a cob nut tree i think, and she days the squirrel takes every one, every year.  good luck tho with your tree, i would love one too, but its not worth just growing it for a squirel

Ah, this hazel's in the garden and there's definitely no squirrels nearby.

I love hazelnuts though so I'm hoping it's going to be productive!

I put 2 bushes in and got a few nuts growing last year.
Squirrels had them all.
I shall net them if there's any this year although squirrels are very crafty AND have sharp teeth.
They completely wrecked the thick metal wire of the peanut holder for the birds.

My neighbour has 5 hazel trees growing down the side of his garden. ALL the nuts fall on my side or get buried by squirrels on my side. This year alone I dug out 71 young hazel trees in various parts of the garden.

Sounds like me with peanut plants!
Wish the neighbours wouldn't feed the tree rats monkey nuts!

Been living in Brittany for over 20 years and have never seen a grey squirrel here, red squirrels perhaps a couple of times a year but never a grey.
