Where to plant Marrow and corgette plants?
« on: June 13, 2014, 15:59 »
I have been given two marrow and courgette plants, Ive never grown them before so the question is how much room should I give them bearing in mind my beds are 2.4 x 1.2m ?

If I plant one courgette either end of my sweet corn bed, will I be able to encourage them to stay and travel around the sweet corn?

Where would you plant them in the bed?

Courgettes and modern marrow varieties do not trail like pumpkins and squashes they're just bushy really.

Have you a bit of undug ground? If so dig some manure into it in two spots about 4ft apart & then put down some membrane or cardboard and plant the 2 plants through it, sink a lemonade bottle next to it with the bottom cut off, water it in well, then water through the bottle & stand well back

I could have the perfect spot see the red area below that would also mean I would only have to dig and manure where I'm planting

Do you have to even ask?  :nowink:

Courgettes are wonderful things - picked small they don't go too crazy. I get about 40 per plant over 3 and a half months. (I've got 6...)

If you're not planting the courgettes at the end of the sweetcorn, you could grow a squash there - to ramble through.

Not that I'm encouraging you, or anything

I will be planting the seeds that Surbie sent me this weekend  ::) Update I went I dug and covered with farmyard manure and covered with cardboard just forgot the lemonade bottle for watering but will do that tomorrow.

Cardboard held down with timber for the moment, weed membrane pegs will be used to keep in them in place so I can remove the timber and then a sprinkle of woodchip will go over the top

I had a little visitor whilst doing this ... I have no idea what he is but he is very trusting and came right up to me, I'm used to my local robin but I have not seen this little fellow before.

Looks like a thrush, have you put him on the bird watch thread, someone will be bound to ID him there. Planting a look good. I've just done more of my squash bed this morning, no plants in yet though.

I didn't know there was a bird watch thread!

I will have to go and look, this little fellow come so close to me and I would not have been surprised if he would have taken something from my hand if offered.
