Put some damp kitchen roll in a tub and put the seeds on top. Cover with more kitchen roll. Put a lid on a keep in a warm place. As soon as the seeds start to show signs of life, get them planted. It gives the seeds a head start and means you don't end up planting any dead ones.

We tried this last year - one of the reasons why we keep old/spare plates,  and put it on the kitchen window sill covered with cling film to help moisture retention. We did have some success.
we also rescue rabbits and guinea pigs, grow own veg

Excellent, I was annoyed with myself for forgetting to plant parsnips a few weeks ago. Have a fresh pack of Gladiator seeds as luck would have it so in they go tomorrow! I do like this forum  :D

I always grow Tender and True, and they have been fine with late sowings too.

I have had a sneaky peek at my chitted seeds and a couple have a very very small shoot i.e. a couple of millimetres.  How long should the shoots be before I handle them.  Bearing in mind I am very very clumsy and am not very good with fragile things  ::)

As long as you can see a definite shoot (check with a magnifying glass/loupe) then sow them, one to a shallow hole,  don't firm the soil too much when you dower then over,  just a little.

As soon as the shoot appears you know the seed has germinated so it's a good un.

It's how I did my row . . .

Ditto.

This time last year I was planting out chitted parsnips after an epic failure to germinate directly. Might need to do again this year looking at the number of seedlings I currently have.
