My noo allotment
« on: February 01, 2011, 19:19 »
We signed for our allotment on Sunday 28th anuary. 1/2 plot, (Though I don't know the size). Haven't done anything to it yet, but we have been advised to take it easy and not to try and do it all at once

anyway, here is a picture

We want to grow
Potatoes
Cauliflower
Cabbage
Beetroot
Carrots
Swede
Broccolli
onions
shallots
courgettes

These are what we want to eat, so don't want beans or peas etc.

Salad stuff will still be grown at home  :D

Good luck and enjoy.

Dont break your back.
When we got an allotment many years ago ( for now we are back garden veg growers) we learned the hard way that trying to clear the whole plot in one go was not only hard work but also not the best way to go about it.

Enjoy the results of your labours.

Thanks  :) No fruit. We grew strawberries at home one year and didn't eat them  Having said that, Keith would like to grow Rhubarb, so any tips gratefully received. I have ordered some blueberry bushes for growing at home.

Thanks also Ma and Pa snip, We shall try and be careful, but it is tempting to try and do it all.

Congratulations on your new plot!! It looks a very good size for a half plot too.
I agree with nige, you must try fruit too. Get those seed catalogues ready for some shopping!!

I'd advise against the fruit at this stage.

Most fruit tends to be long term. Try growing some simple veg, decide what you like and how much of what you need.

After a couple of years you'll get a god idea of what you can or can't grow and what space you need for it. Then you know what space you have for fruit. You should also by then know where best to put it.

I planted loads of Raspberries and Currants when I first got my plot only to find I wanted to move them when I took over the whole plot a year later and opted for raised beds. Then had to wait until the following winter before I could move them into their allotted beds.

thank you. another allotment chap rotovatd half of it for us, though he did say it has a lot of glass. We'll need to be careful, I think there used to be greenhouses here.

That looks like its helped you a fair bit, we got 2 half plots, one came rotovated and we havent had to touch it yet, the other has had quite a few sessions of hard work and still isnt looking anywhere near as good as your before picture, I still only have about a metre dug full width.

 I know, I'm just enjoying the lull before the real work starts.  We have bought an old shed on EBay and have to go and dismantle it on Saturday. My poor bones are aching already! ::)
