brown spots on potato leaves
« on: July 14, 2010, 19:31 »
Hello, Our tatties have suddenly started to get brown spots on the leaves. A gardening book suggest this is due to a magnesium deficiency. can anyone suggest the best product to help with this problem.

thanks

Epsom salts (can buy cheaply at any chemist) add a tablespoon to a watering can full of water or mix up a spray and spray on to the leaves.  Usually perk up in a few days.  If you have caught it early enough I would cut off the affected leaves as secondary diseases can set in

Hi - Its often around this time of year that potato blight can begin also.  Try a search for photos and see if it looks similar

Magmesium defficiency is yellowing between the leaf veins which can also be brown speckles.

Arthur Bowers does epsom salts which you can buy from the garden centre. Alternatively look on the label of liquid feed or tomatoe feed if you have any. If it contains magnesium it will do the same job.

Magnesium deficiency symptoms, especially the brown speckled effect can be mistaken for blight and cause unnessessary panic.

I have had brown spots on my potatoe leaves and swede leaves. On closer inspection i found it was from over eager slug pellet application. The pellets had stuck to the leaves in the wet and acted almost like a chemical burn to the leaves! Doh!
Start at the beginning, and finish at the end!!
