Potting up cucumbers
« on: April 11, 2014, 16:54 »
I need to pot up my outdoor cucumbers tomorrow as they are getting too big for their original small pots. It is the first time I have grown them and I know they are fussy so wanted to check - can I bury the stems like i do with tomatoes etc or will this cause stem rot?

Burying cucumber stems can indeed lead to stem rot.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Try to water them from the bottom by standing the pot in a saucer of water.

I do this with all my plants - they sit in meat trays so I can get several pots to a tray :)

So long as you always use free draining compost ( I use either plenty of vermiculite or lots of grit), never plant any deeper than they are already, and don't water directly around the stem (I bury a litre pot next to the plant to water through), stem rot can USUALLY be avoided.

Thanks for that. I only wanted 2 plants and have 4 doing well so I do have some error room but would be pleased if I could get all 4 through

I potted on my cucumbers this week ... Feel I planted too early but its done now. When potting on my mini cucumbers I noticed white spots close to the soil.. On further inspection the spots are roots on the stem! Only on tht mini cucumbers ... So planted up to the spots, I always water underneath and 5 days on they are happy ... And again little white spots are appearing near the top on the soil!?
2 Books and No idea!!!  Learning as I go!

The more stem you bury, the higher the chance of stem rot. The white spots are roots, bury them at your own risk.
