« on: April 27, 2010, 08:49 »
one of my hens wont get out of nest box unless to eat. i keep turfing her out but she goes back. would she stop the others laying? i only had 3 eggs yesterday whereas its usually 6 or 7 or is it just a coincidence?

she sounds broody   :D
If you don't want her to hatch chicks then you do need to keep kicking her out. When mine go broody and hog the nest boxes the others just squeeze in with her or on top of her and lay their eggs, then the broody just slides the eggs underneath her
Staffies are softer than you think.

forgot to say check that they aren't leaving their eggs elsewhere - under bushes, behind logs, under the coup etc  :)

they will make enough room in the nesting box with the broody one but she will then take the eggs and sit on them. Keep pushing the broody one out so she can eat and drink.

when i get her out she eats and drinks, then goes back in again. theyve laid only 2 eggs again today. how could i tell if she's egg bound or ill. dont think she is but she sits in the box rosey to herself.
