Slightly concerned...Got home tonight and checked on my hen as usual. I have moved her to a broody coop that i have built her and the hatching is due this weekend.

When i peered inside i saw that she had pooped all over the nest?? The eggs were absolutely covered. I hooked her out of there and started to wash the eggs in warm water. It was then that i noticed there was one missing. I thought it might be buried in the straw so started to move it and thats when i noticed small fragments of egg shell in the run. She had eaten one of her eggs!!
It was all gone, 90% of the shell and all the contents.

I cleaned the rest of the eggs up and put fresh bedding in and she has settled straight back down on them. Has anyone heard anything like this before?
She had eaten all the food i had left out for her.
Would she do this if she was hungry?

Concerned

It may be that the egg was no good and in the wild they like other animals will get rid of any evidence (rabbits will eat their young if they are threatened or if they die). At this late stage she would know if the egg was ok or not, so don't worry too much. Just make sure she has plenty of food and water and that she gets off her eggs at least once a day  :D
Staffies are softer than you think.

its natural instints, if a egg is going bad the hen will get rid of it by eaten it. If she left it and it exploded the gasses and gunk would contamenate  the other eggs. So its her way of protecting the other eggs with hopefully chicks in them.

yep my broody did this the other day too - she didn't eat it all but she definitely new something was up as she is fine with all the other eggs - I figure she knows what she is doing!! even though not a day goes by without me noticing how dumb my chickens are generally speaking !
