the French marigolds on the plot (tagetes) very quickly disappeared as slug food ::) but the English ones (calendula) are going great guns :)

I grow flowers because I live in a flat and have no garden  :)

I grow lavender and dwarf sunflowers because they're pretty and attract bees, and some perennials like pansies, daffodils and lily of the valley because I'm lazy and like to see them come up every year without too much effort..

I used to like lily of the valley until I lived in this house. The entire garden is infested with impenetrable clumps of them, so thick you can't even get a fork in to try to dig them up. They smother everything in their path and I cannot get rid of them. I've got the same problem with old-fashioned violets. Both plants are the most invasive I've ever had in a garden.

Trillium - I've not tried calendula tea - what does it taste like?

It's quite mild, like a herbal tea. I mix some dried calendula petals with a bit of dried lavender, steep, then strain out the bits.

I'll be growing flowers on my plot.

Chrysanths, sweet peas, gerbera's and the like for cutting flowers (I have a tiny backyard at the house)
Then I've got a load fo cheap / free packets of wild flowers, nasturtiums and sunflowers that I'm going to throw down round the edges of the plot and round the shed for scent, colour and bees

i grew salsify and scorzenera last year for the first time to have something different to harvest and eat fresh in the winter.

I ate half in the winter and left the rest for this year (a few books etc say you can grow them on for a second year) and havn't i been rewarded.

Sturdy multiple stems off each root, 4-5ft high with several flowers on each stem. Been in flower for 5 weeks and still going.

Purple on the salsify, yellow from scorzenera and the bee's love them

Would look good in a flower garden  :)

I've got aquilegias and marigolds that came in a free packet of seeds and foxgloves because they are nice. Phacelia and Borage do for bees and composting.

Otherwise the flowers are peas, beans, strawberries, raspberries, cauliflowers .....

When inspections are done on our town sites, an eye is given to a balance of crops and flowers for the cup to be presented for the best kept allotment at the town show. Flowering weeds don't count of course - except towards an eviction notice if not removed.

Most of us keep our plots for food but flowering herbs look good. Some of the men have wives who want pretty cut flowers so grow a few. Some plot holders grow flowers for show of course.
