Muscovy duck hatches chickens!
« on: May 09, 2008, 22:49 »
I have one muscovey duck and drake plus 3 bantam hens and cock all together in one house. Duck was broody about 2 months ago,  laid her eggs and finally sat on them in nest box of house.  Left her there to get on with things but nothing happened.  Waited about 35-40 days and I finally gave up and threw away eggs - all rotten! Duck wouldnt give up however!  She swiped a few bantam eggs and continued to hatch so today I have 5 little chicks!!! Are they safe with her-  shes big nd heavy and im afraid she might squish one with her foot. I have moved them all into a cordoned off corner of garage and just wondering if she will be able to mother them  - show them where to eat etc? Or would they be better off on their own under a lamp?

leave them be .. they will be fine when the chicks are able put chick crumb down for them the duck will eat this as well so try to cover it so only the chicks can get it .also keep the chocks away from any pond etc as they will think like mom they can swim..
