Wry tail
« on: August 13, 2012, 16:10 »
Well this is a new one on me and I couldn't find anything on the Forum when I did a search.  So I thought I would share this with everyone.

I have 2 Light Sussex Bantams left out of a hatch of 3 boys and 2 girls, they are around 16 weeks old.  I noticed yesterday that one of their tails was wonky which must be just developing as she was fine before.  She is always sparring with her sister in a couple of kids playing sort of way.  I thought she must have injured herself but after an internet search found "Wry tail".

She seems to be holding it straight some of the time but it is more inclined to bend to her right side.  From what I have read she should be fine for laying and not suffer because of this malformation.  She will be no good for breeding but that won't be a problem.

Here are some photos of her and her sister.  If anyone thinks it is not wry tail and is a symptom of something more sinister please let me know.   ;)

Hello ANHBUC
it looks like other pics I've seen. Very interesting thank you.
Isn't there a genetic link?

From what I have read they think that it is genetic.  Strange for it to not be apparent when she was younger.  Just hoping her sister doesn't develop the same but she has no signs at the moment so fingers crossed.

It is some sort of deformity in the tail rather than the angle the feathers are at.  She sometimes manages to straighten it but only for a second.  It doesn't seem to affect her at all so as long as she is a happy hen it is not a problem.   :D

I have nurtured alovely cream legbar cockerel...hatched from the bluest egg I could get hold of. Very promising as a chick, with bright yellow legs, perfect comb and colouring. PERFECT to be my new breeding cock?? NOPE, at 14 weeks his tail has gone wry! Sob!! I think this must mean I shouldnt breed from him  :(

From what I have read TeaPots that is right, sorry.

Turns out my 2 Light Sussex Bantams are both cockerels.  They were no where near as developed as the other cockerels but I still had my doubts.  They both saw one of my broody bantams and started dancing round her displaying.  When I managed to get them away from her they started to crow!!!  I will keep her out of sight in a hope that they will keep quiet for a little longer.   ::)
