Post by: thedadtony on September 25, 2012, 20:59
Started the rhubarb wine yesterday, cheated a bit, had to buy the rhubarb from Farm Foods,£6 for hopefully five gallons plus the sugar so not to bad.I set the garage up today ready for cider making tomorrow, thought it would give me something to do while it was raining, was doing alright till the roof started leaking just above where the scrabbler motor sits!!!ha, ha.

I used some rhubarb from the garden to make some wine that someone (sorry, can't be bovvered looking at the rest of the forum right now) had posted from the Guardian? website. only made a gallon as the crop was very poor this year. it's taken quite a while to ferment, not sure if it's something to do with the change in season and temp but it feels like it's taking forevever to ferment. i can only hope it will be very high alcohol when it's done.

Hi Bearhugger, the rhubarb wine I started is still fermenting,I started it on the 28th Sept. and it's still going strong. I ended up putting too much sugar in ,S.G. was 1.110,so I'm hoping it will keep going a while yet ,I don't want it to sweet!

Rhubarb may be going slow owing to the acidity.
Many people will add chalk in some form to reduce the acidity.

Just a thought.
