polytunnel anchoring it down
« on: April 28, 2013, 09:54 »
Hi guys, i could reply to the link under my signin name so i've done it this way.
A commented to this link.

http://www.allotment-garden.org/garden-diary/703/ive-bought-a-polytunnel/

I've brought one pretty much the same but mine was 3m x 6m,

It took me a while to have it all up and complete, I had the same trouble, i came up with this idea:-

I dug some holes a foot down then assembled my anchor plates by putting a U bolt on the bottom of the 400mm pole, plate on next then U bolt on top.

Anchor plates:- http://www.firsttunnels.co.uk/subsubcategory.asp?catid=89

once the polytunnel was up i put the anchor plate on the two outsides and one in the centre. back filled the holes then attached with cable ties, then put silver gaffer tape around them then addaed another U bolt to hold it all in Place.

For the cover i dug a trench around the whole thing layed the cover in it put some old fence posts a long it, then backed filled the trenches.

So far so good i've had some strong winds up on the plot and it's still there.

Hope this is of some help.

Dear God, Please can you stop the wind and rain and bring on the nice weather. Amen

I screwed 7" by 2" planks to the wooden frame and then staked & screwed stakes through to planks. Hasn't budged so far. (My tunnel was an unusual design with timber base frame and metal plates with scaff pipe welded on to take 2" red electrical conduit plastic pipes.  Electrical pipe screwed to scaff pipe with Tech screws. I bought the plastic from a polytunnel manufacturer. Very cheap way to build a tunnel and has withstood very high winds. Now in it's 3rd season and going strong. See youtube "how to build a polytunnel, Ireland" to watch it being built.
