I don't think it has been banned as I've just bought 2 bags of it! I've never used it before and I'm not sure about the smell    - like a mixture of chocolate and dog cr@p!!

But it is supposed to deter cats so I thought I'd give it a go  :D

I used it some years back then the price shot up. I loved the smell though.

Prices skyrocketed here as well, then we simply couldn't find it. Another problem is that dogs love it, and chocolate is poison to dogs.

I actually liked the smell ~~ the only thing I didn't like was the white fluffy mould that would grow on it. This did eventually dissappear. It really improved the quality soil :D Its a shame I cant seem to find it in my local garden centre!

Hello All
Here in Central Pennsylvania, in Hershey PA better know as Chocolate Town USA they didn't used to be able to give away the cocoa shell waste, until someone got the bright idea let make people think it's a mulch.  Now with the rising price of raw cocoa they have passed their cost off onto the mulch users....  Seems funny having to pay a high for somone else's waste!!  :x  If gardeners didn't use it as mulch, they'd have to bury it in a Landfill somwhere!!!!
Never underestimate the power of your actions. With one small gesture you can change a person's life.

Where did you get it from, please, as I used them once, and they were excellent.

Don't know about the cats, since as Trillium says dogs and foxes are attracted to it big way.

Cocoa mulch is poisonous to dogs, so use with caution with your canines.

I wouldn't have thought of that - probably because I don't have a dog

Hi Gobs, I got it from my local garden centre, they didn't have nearly as much of it as bark etc, so maybe it isn't that popular anymore?

Cocoa Shell is still around, but the cost of importing it into the UK makes it uneconomic.

Coir (as its called) comes in highly compressed blocks about 12" x 12" x 18", and you have to leave them out in the rain in a clean concrete bay until they swell up and expand. We had considerable trouble getting them to do this (called 'wetting up' in the business ) recently, which makes it too much of a pitb to mess about with.
