moving bluebells and dafs etc
« on: February 18, 2013, 07:02 »
I have an area in the garden where I have snowdrops, bluebells and Dafs and I'm gong to hard landscape this year and want to move them - Is it best to wait until they flower or as they poke their heads up (now). or do I wait until they have dies off but I can still see where they are?

Bluebells particularly, are often bought "in the green" meaning as they are starting to produce greenery i.e. now and before flowering. This is an ideal time to move them. :) I'm not familiar with the same for snowdrops and daffs, but I imagine they would move OK like that too.

Snowdrops are also moved in the green - but for some reason, I certainly don't know why   it is recommended that daffs are moved in the summer when they've dried back.

If you move them in the green let us know how they get on  ;)

I have successfully transplanted daff when in flower... you just need to make sure you dig up a large clump of earth around them

I know it is recommended to move them when they have dies right down, but sometime needs must

The only thing I would add is that you need to make sure they are replanted at the same level (as with snowdrops and bluebells) ie so all the pale stem is buried

I have had situations where everyone of these have been in the wrong place when in or near flower -- I just dig up with a big "rootball" -- drop the lot in a bucket -- carry to new spot and replant at same depth -- never lost any yet -- in fact I often split (not excessively) and spread around. Equally all can be replanted as bulbs in dry state but no need to wait -- move in the green works fine.
I have recently rescued a lot of each from in laws bungalows when the properties were sold at this time of year and added them to my orchard
Best of luck
