paths between raised beds
« on: October 18, 2016, 15:35 »
Hi all,
I知 looking to sort out the paths between my raised beds. Planning to put a weed membrane down and then gravel. Watching last weeks Gardeners world Adam Frost was using some kind of gravel which compacts down nicely. No doubt what he used was something ridiculously pricey, but it got me thinking maybe I can use Type 1 sub base material. Do you see any issues with this?
Or any other tips much appreciated!

I think it is called self-binding gravel, they used Breedon gravel on an estate path near here, nice colour :)

Thanks.
Guess my concern is will the weeds just grow through it/in it. I know that is the case with whatever I do though!

If you use decent landscape membrane, weeds will not grow through it (unless it is Japanese knotweed of course) and self binding gravel is an excellent project. A slightly cheaper option is hoggin perhaps?

Not to disagree with you Sunny - but I spent Sunday morning cutting bind weed roots from either side of heavy duty woven weed proof membrane which it had grown through, the membrane had been covered with bark chippings rather than gravel.

I've been looking to renewing my paths lately and was leaning towards slate clippings for ease of weeding, longevity and at least redesigning things would be possible. Price was about the same as the self binding.

Thanks both,
is hoggin the same as the Type 1 sub-base material? You can get a builders bag of that for 」40 from Wickes so that is a cheap option.
