New allotment
« on: June 18, 2007, 13:49 »
I have just posted a question relating to a new allotment.  While on I would mention that I have a lot of borage on the allotment and I know it is a companion plant to squashes, but does it have any other use?
Many thanks.

Hi Jan - Don't they put Borage in Pimms? not that i drink it. I do have the flowers in a salad though and grow white and blue varieties, it also attracts bees and is used by herbalists. It self sows in my garden and i tend to leave but if you are overun suggest composting before it sets seed :)

Many thanks for your reply.  Since posting I went online and apparently the leaves can be chopped in salad and pureed into soup.  Also as starflower oil derives from borage it is supposed to have anti depressive properties and a mild cucumber taste.  You are right ,and it is one of the leaves in Pimms and it is also popular in Germany apparently as a component of a herb "green sauce" served with frankfurters.
