need advice for my chicks
« on: March 08, 2013, 21:55 »
Two months ago one of my hens died as I was trying to clean her bum it had become cloggy.  Now I think another may have a cloggy bum.  What's the best treatment ?

Some people sit the hen's bum in some warm water, hold her down for a little while, then carefully clean off the poop.  I've not had that happen often, but one hen kept getting a bit of a mucky bum and I clipped her frilly knickers a bit.

She was healthy, I just think she was lazy and couldn't squat properly!  :)

are they laying? Did she die when you put her in the water, the shock can cause death.

I have one who has a mucky bottom - her morning poo is always a fairly loose one, which generally clogs her fluffy bum up....rest of her poos are firm after that....she creates like anything if i put her in the washing up bowl for a bum cleaning session, so i now use baby sensitive wipes, and her bum is clean in no time, and it also enables me to stay splash free!!

I did a bum clean when mine was poorly.  She really loved the hairdryer afterwards - on low power on its side on the kitchen worktop and I could hold her in both arms and get the warm air to her feathers.  She had nodded off by the time I'd finished! It got her clean and dry but she didn't recover from whatever it was.
