Hi ,im having a go at growing swede this year are there any tips for success please .I have mucked a plot ready. I did try some plants from a garden centre last year but they were rubbish ,growing from seed this year.

we did a trial last year by growing swede seed in modules 2 seed per station removing the worst one then transplanted them in a raised bed they where not so big as some swede but we where a bit late sowing the seed but good tasting

but of cause the old fashioned way was to drill the seed in a row then take out some of  plants till you had about 15to 20CM gap we call it gapping round here then the swede grew up to a large swede

Thanks all,that was very helpful ,i'v got seed in modules showing so fingers crossed for a better result this year.

I sow start of June into modules, this year I sowed on the 2nd and eventually planted them out july 16th, I think I repotted them once as the modules i use are small and they were a second crop after kohlrabi and early beetroot. But yeah you can sow them a bit earlier if you want. I put them under netting immediately or the pigeons eat them. I find them  reliable and easier than most brassicas as you can just leave them out all winter.

I think starting in modules/pots is a good idea as you want them decent sized when you plant them out. In my experience, everything tries to eat them, so netting is a must, even then slugs have a go
