Ex battery hens?
« on: April 29, 2014, 20:33 »
Just wondering what breed are battery hens? Does anyone on here organise rescuing them? I have always wanted chickens but am unsure if I will have any but do like the idea of having ex battery hens.

I cant answer all of your questions but have a read of the following.
They organise rehoming and do them several times a year, and have increased the pick up points so there maybe one near you.

They are not always the easiest hens to start with.
Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted!!

They are amazing pets!! BHWT are a great help and would only send you home with healthy hens (unless you asked otherwise). Contact them and have a chat, you will soon know if they are the hens for you.

As a similarly prospective hen keeper, I also had the original intention of re-homing some ex-battery hens but have also been advised that they aren't necessarily the best to start with  :(   I understand they can be more prone to health problems?

I'm (almost!) decided that I will go with non-battery hens to start with, but with a view to keeping some in the future once I'm more experienced in hen keeping.

Still, I'd be interested to hear about other's experiences with ex-bats  :)
I thought of something really interesting and witty to say......then forgot.

I started with ex-batts and have kept them now for about 4 years.  I love them.  They may need extra
care and attention but you have the support of this wonderful board.

I started with ex-batts  -   it was wonderful seeing them regaining their health and strength, feeling the ground under their feet for the first time, watching their reaction to wind blowing through their feathers and looking up at the sky.   Be warned though, 'chicken tv' can be very addictive!

Go for it!
