stupid question about planting spuds
« on: March 19, 2008, 10:28 »
Sorry to be a bit daft, but how do I know when is the right time to plant my spuds?
I've got Winston (2nd early?) and Pink Fir Apple (a bit later?) - all chitting away nicely; haven't a clue whether to put them in the ground yet.
Can any of you experts help please?

Cheers

once the frost have gone, If you plant in April they will  soon catch up to those planted in march, think about it, more light, more warmth. My earlies go in 1st or 2nd week of April depnding on weather, cant see the logic in covering them with fleece etc.

Thankyou - I thought I might be in for some emergency planting but it seems like I have plenty of time.

Traditionally potatoes have been planted at Easter, but it is quite early this year. 2nd earlies are usually planted early to mid April and maincrops mid to late April.  A better guide is the weather conditions in your area.
Potatoes are quite frost sensitive so early plantings are best protected with garden fleece or similar. You are much better off delaying planting if the wetaher is bad and use these timings as a guide rather than a hard and fast rule.
