« on: May 29, 2009, 18:15 »
Sorrrrryyyy another potato question! ::)

How much should I eath up my main crop. I've earthed them twice & they are now about a foot & half up the ground so should I carry on?

I planted them quite deep

I'd stop there!

I planted mine about the regulation 5" depth and hill up to 12" max.

I only earth up a few inches at a time as this helps keep the weeds down.

I take it you can actually see the leaves!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Sorry but seeing as its an earthing up potatoes thread...why do we earth up? and when do we stop? I know it should be done, and am doing it but I don't know why or what it achieves/does?  ???

We earth up for two reasons. The potatoes we harvest grow on the plant stem, so, the longer the stem the more spuds we have. But, the top potatoes will go green if exposed to sunlight, thus making them poisonous.
