Strawberry's plants
« on: August 04, 2012, 08:22 »
Hi guys,

Been reading a lot lately that everyone has started cutting down their strawberry's plants, can i get some advice on this, my plants where all runners off a friend the beginning of this year, so they wasn't quite established to bear any fruit, they seem like they are just starting to grow well no dead leaves or nothing.  I was wondering if i should leave them until the leaves start dying off before cutting them back?  i know with the strange weather we are having now the few i have growing in my garden where setting flowers last winter with no signs of dying back. so a little confessed of what to do.

Please help.

Thanks
Dear God, Please can you stop the wind and rain and bring on the nice weather. Amen

Strawberries replace all their leaves every year. They just don't do it very tidily all at once, so unless you only have a few plants so that you can remove leaves as they die off, it is much easier to cut them all off around now. The leaves will die back anyway, and this prevents any lurkers below the foliage from rotting and causing issues later.

Give the plants a good feed. I use rose fertiliser, but anything with ptash in to help flowering and fruiting next season will do). new leaves will grow back within a week or two and the plants wil look lush.

Hope that helps
