Is anyone harvesting garlic yet?
« on: June 14, 2013, 11:22 »
Our only went in in March (Solent White + Flavour + J Sainsbury's) so I'd expected to wait until the end of June, but the leaves are looking very yellow already.

Should I leave it or pull it out? I've not a had a adig yet so no idea what the bulbs look like.

I think it's the weather making them look a bit sad, I dug one up to use green this week, and although it's Early Purple Wight which is supposed to be ready in May/early June - it hadn't started cloving yet.

I've given a feed and left the rest to get on with it.

I'm growing Early Purple Wight too and a furtle around the base showed only some slight swelling. The leaves are still strongly green though so I have hope.

I've still got garlic from last year, so I can wait.

We dont really eat garlic so i didnt grow any, does that make me a rubbish allotmenteer as the old boys seem to think some crops have to be grown. They grow bits they dont like and compost them  thats proper madness in my book.

Grow what you like to eat. Seems daft to spend time and effort on something you're not interested in.

That was my take on it all but you'll be suprised at how many think its barmy. We only grew board beans at first because one of the old boys was adament we should, we put them in to keeo him quiet  now we have discovered homegrown we like them but we grew garlic i the past and 99% got wasted. Its a taste i cant quiet get my head around, along with tomatoes  ??? I was practically raised by my grandparents and meat, potatoes and veg was the menu week i week out. We do have a better variety now but i do occassionally slip back to nans routine  :D

my garlics looking a bit sad as well. It was planted in modules in January and left outside...its had the required frosting many times and I was hoping it would be fine but after a poke around it doesnt look to be swelling at all...I'll just leave it as long as is needed and hope for the best as theres a good 40 odd plants in and will keep us going for a good while, hopefully

Ours has looked nice and healthy so far (although I have nothing to compare it to having not grown it before) - thick green upright stems and we got it in just before it snowed for two weeks at the end of March. So no reason to doubt it...

I'll have a poke around this weekend and report back!

Our Music plants are growing well and a firkle last weekend showed no cloving yet so they are perhaps due a feed, although I remember they cloved up from nothing inside a week last year, after we noted the same situation. They seem exceptionally tall this year, especially having put a growth spurt on after Tuesday's rain and there is the tiniest bit of yellowing on some of the leaf tips.

Basically, they're not ready yet. :)

BQ, a kitchen without garlic?

I for one don't care what the " old boys" tell me I should be  growing if I have no use for it its not going in

I quite like broad beans and partner likes garlic , I don't like the likes of asparagus so whats the point

It's interesting to know what people are and aren't growing and why, but the topic is are you harvesting your garlic yet? :)

Glad it's not just me, then. Mine are very tall as well. Scapes just appearing.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Mine are all tall, some starting to yellow. I forget what varieties I have in but it seems some are bulbed up but some, after a quick furtle at the weekend (you can't beat a weekend furtle ;)), are still like single cloves. Some are obviously earlier varieties, I hope
