Hose
« on: April 15, 2010, 10:49 »
I want to buy some hose that I can cut up and use to support netting over beds. Garden hose is too flimsy. I know you can get better hose and I am wondering exactly what I can get and where I can buy it from.

Blue water pipe from any DIY store will do.  Put a stake in the ground and fit the hoops on to the stake for more stability. :)
Cheese makes everything better.

It's much stronger and will keep it's shape.

I am going for it! (I always get excited when I make a decision.) This is the one I will buy.

Sorry, that's still hosepipe so I have no idea if it would be strong enough.  What I am suggesting is in the plumbing section.

What you want is blue mdpe 20mm water mains pipe which you will get from a builders merchant in 25m lengths. 2m lengths should give you the size of hoops you want.

See e.g.

check ebay for the blue pipe, I bought 57 meters to pipe in my shed for peanuts.

As it's too big to ship, if you can find some local to you there are often very few bidders.
I hoe, I hoe, it's off to weed I go.

You people are awesome! Thanks for all your help.

This is more expensive but it comes with anchors. What do you think?

I have made two carrot fly covers and used ordinary hose clamped to 8' by 4" boards and 2' wide. Yes it does sag so I have taped an 8' bamboo cane to the underneath of the five hoops. That makes it more rigid but still sags but all in one direction. To compensate for that I have cut a Y stick for each end pushed into the soil to rest the bamboo cane on. One length of hose pipe at £7 made 10 hoops for two frames. A lot cheaper than the blue pipe.
Hope this is of some help.

Depending on the height that you want, I use ordinary green hosepipe pushed over bamboo canes of a suitable height - one on either side of the bed or area. To stop them sagging in the middle, I push a length of cane into the pipe so it is sited in the middle and I use another length of cane to push it into the middle. I have also just bought some replacement wire for a rotary clothes drier from Wilko's which I am going to use on my rasperry bed as support for the netting. Canes would not be long enough. It was only £2 plus so was cheap enough.  :tongue2:
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.
