Climbers:
Boston Ivy is a rampant climber--- its great! Grows v quickly and the foliage turns a lovely red in fall, Stunning!!! Clematis if you like flowers, or Morning Glory.... it romps.
Or you could grow hops and use it in brewing too!!
All easy to keep in check with pruning.
Or jasmine? smells incredible
Chocolate vine is really stunning climber, and not too common.

Ok, for the 4ft wall.... how about training a quince or one of its relatives from the Chaenomeles family?

Its spikey so its good for keeping unwanted visitors out?

Its harder for the 4ft fence as its a bit low for most climbers.... How about tall flowering plants like Foxgoves, Red Hot pokers, Sweet Pea and Verbena Bonariensis to distract from it?
Or fit hanging baskets and put some trailers in it like Nasturtium?

A good few of the modern clematis only grow to about 4ft and the older ones are ideal for the 6ft fences :)
If the 4ft fence is not in too hot a location some hydrangeas would be nice.

Good idea mumofstig...

Clematis montana is a quick growing climbing shrub some forms with 15' spread. It will reach the height of whatever it is growing on / over.

Elizabeth is white and Rubens is pink. There are other forms and some are slightly scented. I believe there are also evergreen varieties.
