Title: Shrubs at poundland
Post by: monkeyboysee on February 05, 2009, 14:50
hi,

i bought a load of shrubs and bulbs from Poundland in Lincoln, roses, strawberries etc. some are already sprouting and look reallyhealthy, i'd recommend giving thema go.

can anyone advise how i should store them til planting time? their bases are in soil in abag tied up, should i plant them in pots and water etc? iat the moment they are stood on a shelf in a outside kind of potting shed, dark and dry?

Think I'd pot them up - if you leave them in the dark too long the new shoots will suffer.

some are already sprouting

You'll need to keep them somewhere sheltered and frost-free until the plants outside catch up with them!  Realistically, they'll probably need protection into April or May, because the growth they start indoors will be very soft and sappy.  Light and cool is the way to go (and cool will help hold them back) - do you have an unheated porch or anything like that they could go in?  Alternatively, do you know anyone with an unheated greenhouse that's not being used at the moment?

thanx,

this might sound daft, but how much light do they need? just normal daylight or exposure to sun? or is artificial light ok?
