Guttering
« on: December 31, 2011, 22:03 »
Hello All

I would like some advice, the allotment rules state that I need guttering on the shed to collect rainwater, but guttering is looking to cost as much as the shed did, well nearly so I thought about making some out of plastic bottles or something but am unsure, or possibly skip diving or anything really. Any ideas is what I am trying to say

Many thanks

Adam

Ask at the tip???  We got some lengths of guttering from a handyman who was otherwise going to skip lengths he'd removed from some job. We nailed them to our fence at toddler height for our little folk to grow fast salad crops in.
My chickens probably make more sense than I do so forgive me ;-)

Look in skips and ask at the tip, there's not usually any need to buy it

Freecycle?

When I did cleaning at the local double glazing place, we got loads of guttering from them for free when the fitters brought the old stuff back after fitting DG, conservatories etc.

They were pleased to get rid of it as they have to pay for their skip emptying by weight!

Whereabouts are you located Adam?

Shame you are not nearer, we've probably got enough spare for a shed!  Especially as 7 of our chicken sheds have gone now!

Ask at a double glazing depot - or somewhere that fits fascias and gutters. They take the old stuff off. Believe me - they are pleased to let you have it for free. It just gets skipped. Look in yellow pages to find a company / depot.

Take a drive around some estates and look for roofing / guttering people replacing guttering. I did that the other day and found 2 lots.  :D

and while you're getting the gutters themselves, check the skips for downspouts, clips, shoes and anything else you could re-use - the costs adds up when you start buying them (as I have learned...) . I got a real bonanze from a skip last year, and the person whose skip it was was delighted as the stuff had been dumped in his skip by someone else!

keep a long luggage strap or two with you while searching - strapped together even lots of guttering is light to carry as a single bundle

and ask on Freegle as well...lots of people have offcuts sitting around.

Make sure you ask before you take anything though - otherwise it's technically theft.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...
