Title: Lawnmower question

Dear all,
Apologies for starting off with a question but ive been lurking for quite a while!
I've just been given (for free !!!!!!) a champion petrol mower which will be perfect for the allotment borders but im not sure whether its a 2 or 4 stroke. I got it started quite easily this morning but I'm worried I might cause it damage if I don't use two stoke oil etc. Can't see an oil filler cap if it is a 4 stroke.........
Any help would be greatly appreciated its a champion TD 464, I've tried to google it but only get the R464....doh!

Hi, welcome and certainly don't apologise for asking questions.  :)

I asked exactly the same question about a lawnmower a few weeks back.  Apparently, if there is no oil sump (hence no oil filler cap), it will be two stroke.

I have been browsing and found Marklands piece about a petrol mower. I have a Flymo hover mower. It takes a petrol oil mix 25:1 using ordinary car engine oil and unleaded petrol. The combination of special synthetic 2 stroke oil in modern engines is supposed to be 50:1.
I have just tabled a piece about old Flymo mowers because I could not find this topic thread. Please look at the piece on  mowers  27/28 Sept 2008. Do you have any type number?

Most two stroke engines have the petrol/oil ratio on the filler cap.

Synthetic 2 stroke oil is for modern 2 stroke engines. I think I would keep to 25:1 with ordinary engine oil. I certainly did when I could make my Flymo engines work. I can't get a spark.
